Bryan Station Middle School Girls Who Code started by our sponsor, Melissa Brewer, when she went to the KY State Technology Education Conference in Louisville, KY several years ago. Nearly all of the student workers were male. She started asking, "Where are the girls?" After some research, Mrs.Brewer found Girls Who Code founded by Reshma Saujani. This organization closes the gender gap for females and minorities in the computer science field.
Our group started 2017-2018 school year. We have learned so much from the Girls Who Code program while also building a supportive sisterhood with each other. We have learned about many famous women in science and business including Judy Faulkner, owner of Epic Medical Records and Katherine Johnson, NASA engineer (Hidden Figures). Our first projects were presented to parents at an end of the year celebration! But, we have added so much more since. Last year, we have joined our state's STLP program. This year, we are still learning. We went to regionals and were invited to the state STLP competition. We are had two students invited to the semi-final finals for thier DPOJ projects. We also expanded our activities this year. We invited a local public librarian to teach us Python. We had been using Scratch for our coding up to then and we wanted to learn something new. We were also invited to Frankfort to participate in Advocacy Day. We had a rally in the Rotunda of the Capitol Building and were about to talk and show our projects to state legislators. It was a great day!!! We are also going to our district STEM Fair on March 21st and to the KY STLP State Championship in April. Please check out our projects page to see what we have been creating and doing this year.
We are learning, leading, and bonding! Join Girls Who Code
